Tarot Circle: Family Issues

by Brigit on January 13, 2012 in Tarot Circle

This week, Ale from Germany has sent in her Celtic Cross reading for our Tarot Circle interpretation.

As with all Tarot Circle posts, I’ll provide my initial thoughts and then I’ll hand it over to you, the reader, to use the comments section to write what you see.

Remember there’s no right or wrong and you don’t have to be an experienced Tarot reader to comment.

The Question

Ale’s question is about her parents-in-law. She writes that she feels they have acted against her and her son, and so she has decided to move away and not see them anymore. While this was three years ago, Ale still finds it difficult to understand why they acted this way towards her son.

Ale asked the Tarot cards, “What was their real intention, to act like that to my son?”

We do need to be quite careful with this question as it relates to a third party who is not present for the Tarot reading and who has not provided their permission. This can raise issues of privacy and ethics which you can read more about here.

Ideally, we would rephrase this question to, “What does Ale need to know about the way in which her parents-in-law responded to her and her son?

The Tarot Spread

Ale used the Celtic Cross spread, drawing these Tarot cards:

  • Significator – Magician
  • Crossing card – Wheel of Fortune
  • Above – The World
  • Below – Five of Pentacles
  • Recent Past – Queen of Swords
  • Near Future – Ten of Pentacles
  • Advice – Six of Wands
  • External influences – Page of Swords
  • Hopes and fears – Tower
  • Outcome – Four of Cups

Ale’s Interpretation of Her Tarot Reading

Ale has also provided her own interpretation of her Tarot reading.

  • The Magician may describe that I am aware of my actions.
  • The Wheel of Fortune suggests that karma will play a big role about it or there is not much to do about it.
  • The Five of Pentacles  may indicate how I feel abandoned and unwanted about myself or about my son.
  • The Queen of Swords describes my mother-in-law or her behaviour . She is being rational, cold, distant and never acts with such emotions. Or maybe it is my final action towards to them when I used  a sharp tongue to tell them my opinion about their attitudes.
  • The World seems to be a good sign but maybe it is another indication for us to relocate again.
  • The Ten of Pentacles suggests wealth and good fortune is on the way again.
  • The Six of Wands may show me acting with self-confidence or seeing myself as winner
  • The Page of Swords reflects my son. He has strong Aquarian qualities in his natal chart and he asks a lot of questions.
  • The Tower highlights that I am afraid any sudden changes.
  • The Four of Cups reflects that I don’t appreciate my in-law’s behaviour.

My Interpretation of Ale’s Tarot Reading

Firstly, I think Ale has done a great job at interpreting her own reading. Remember that the Tarot cards you draw often have specific messages just for you. That is, what you, as the reader, see in the cards first off is often what you are meant to know about those cards. Getting a second opinion often just confirms what you have already seen for yourself.

Nonetheless, let me add a few other observations and ideas to Ale’s interpretation.

If we go back to Ale’s original question, it was to ask why her in-law’s acted in this way. To me, this is more about the past actions of an external party, so the Recent Past card and the External Influences card will have the most relevance for answering her question.

The Queen of Swords in the Recent Past confirms that what was said and done by both parties came from a place of no emotion, rationality and perhaps even a cold heart as Ale has noted. While it would be easy to say this card reflects the mother-in-law alone, I do think it’s important to look at this card as an indication of the dynamic of the relationship. That is, both parties are responsible for how they have responded and upon reflection, Ale may also acknowledge that she too acted like the Queen of Swords.

The Page of Swords sits in the External Influences and as Ale noted, this probably reflects her son. Isn’t it interesting that we have both the Page and Queen of Swords here. Mother and son? Family ties? I see this as a subtle reminder that despite the family issues here, Ale’s son is still her mother-in-law’s grandson so Ale does need to acknowledge there is still a family connection. Her son still deserves to know who his grandma is and have that connection, even if it has been a little nasty as of late.

The Below card will also be important here as it relates to the underlying factors involved in the situation. The Five of Pentacles is about being left out in the cold and isolated. Perhaps Ale has been impacted by this situation because her in-laws have shown no sign of helping her and her son when they are in need. Perhaps Ale needed financial support, but they refused to provide it. She has been left to fend for herself and her son, and this is very disappointing and hurtful.

So, clearly a difficult situation. Let’s know focus on how to move forward by turning to the Advice card – the Six of Wands. Ale needs to hold her head high and just move forward now, feeling proud of herself and what she has accomplished. It is no use having nay-sayers in your life. Instead, the advice is to surround herself with positive people who support her.

And where to from here? The Four of Cups shows that she is unlikely to respond at all to her in-laws and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is no contact for several years given the hurt that has been caused. It doesn’t mean that there will never be any contact, but I suspect that she will not to be open to any sort of invitation for communication for a while.

Interesting, too, to see the Ten of Pentacles. If Ale has been suffering financially, then she is going to find a way to bring wealth into her life. Perhaps there is an inheritance, a new relationship with a wealthy man, a financial gift, or improvements in her own career and income.

First off, I would like to stat my reading by saying that there are more Minor Artcana cards than there are Major Arcana; this means that Ale had control of the situation more than she might realize. The Four Major Arcana cards in her reading could determine the weight of her situation. A Ten is an echo of its lower form: one; the Wheel of Fortune is the challenge for the Magician. What the Wheel of Fortune means for me is that she’s letting Destiny take its turns. She isn’t the one in the driver’s seat anymore; she has let things take their turns whatever they may be. Ale has made her choice with full awareness, as the Magician would. She took action and has the potential for whatever challenges that Fate might throw on her. The World card above the Magician and the Wheel of Fortune affirms her goal: to attain self-confidence, completion, and integrity. I just noticed that the cherub, eagle, lion, bull, lemniscate (infinity symbol), the number zero (the wreath), the colour blue, are symbols which are both present in the World card and the Wheel Card. For me, this message is a calling to Ale: whatever choice she makes (as the Magician), the Universe (the World) will often turn (the Wheel of Fortune) the way she likes. The Ten of Pentacles (another card numbered ten) affirms this; this card is opposing the poverty and destitution of the Five of Pentacles. It’s saying that her efforts will be rewarded and as the Magician manifesting her own free will to accomplish her goals, she will have her basic, economic, and financial needs satisfied. The Five of Pentacles has been Ale’s motivation to appear “All-Controlling” and “All Powerful” as the Magician card. Because of the treatment that she might have gotten from her in-laws, she became self-sufficient and must have challenged destiny to bring its worst at her. A situation in her recent past must also be the reason why Ale transformed her power of words (Queen of Swords) into a higher power (Magician). Like she said, hurtful words have been spoken between in-laws and herself; her relationship with her in-laws must already have been distorted. To add more, somebody in her life must have had the authority to send her away; the Queen of Swords, with such power, must have had the power to control her life that lead her and her son to be “out in the cold.” Ale is afraid of any sudden changes that might occur in the near future, as described in the Tower card. The Tower card is above the Page of Swords and below the Four of Cups. As an answer to her question, Ale needs to the Page of Swords and The Tower card. When combined, these cards may be telling her upsetting news about sudden changes, downfalls, and unwanted revelations. Two numbered ten cards also indicate change, which confirms our Tower card in the Hopes and Fears position. Maybe Ale is afraid of how her in-laws are manipulating her life, particularly when it comes to her son. Two Court cards of the Tarot affirms this: the Page of Swords, and the Queen of Swords. The Page of Swords, as a person, is someone willing to get into all the action; he is mentally restless, curious, and would bug you at the most trivial things. The Page’s mother, the Queen of Swords, is a perceptive woman and knows how to discipline her son; she might be thinking of ways to slice his talkative manners. The relationship that Ale had had in the past is hostile, cold, and forward, like the mother-and-son relationship of the Swords court card. Ale’s perspective of her in-laws might also have moved from a harsh one to a lesser harsh one – from the Queen of Sword’s (sharp-tongued) perspective to that of a Page of Swords (irritability). The Page of Swords, also might be the cause of the victory that Ale is perceiving. When she left her in-laws, she might have seen it as a successful route to take. Her ego overpowers here and others might praise her for the decision that she has made. Not only did she get recognition of her actions; she has also gained the freedom that she desired (like the Page of Swords would desire). Ale has gotten up from the destitution that she and her son had experienced before. The achievement she is accumulating in the Six of Wands empowers the World card in the Aspirations position. She must recently have gotten the satisfaction and belongingness that she desired; as a result, she is feeling “on top of the world” like the Page of Swords. Amidst of all these wonderful events, she needs to know that Fate (Wheel of Fortune) can crumble her ego down anytime; the Tower in the Wild Card position affirms this. Despite the destruction of the communication barrier that will happen between Ale and her in-laws, the disputants will still remain complacent, silent, and dissatisfied. Neither will stand up and give and receive kindness; both will remain at a standstill. The Four of Cups, as the outcome card , also suggests re-evaluation; perhaps both parties are going to think over what harsh words have been outspoken, how each can come to a resolution (if they’re willing), and if the situation will lead to any reconciliation. Too much of the coulour blue suggests stagnation; each parties are unwilling to bend down and accept their faults. You may not want to hear this from a stranger, but both parties should take responsibility and be mature I making quick decisions. Too little of the colour red (found in the Wheel of Fortune; worn in the Five of Pentacles, Ten of Pentacles, Page of Swords, Six of Wands, The Tower, and The Four of Cups) can indicate negative detachment. The separation that happened caused Ale and her son to have little communication or no communication at all with their in-laws; while this is happening, the filial relationship becomes broken. Too little red also means suppressed anger; all the anger that has been bottled up has been realized by the Queen of Swords; soon, those emotions will be harvested by the Page of Swords. If they will be released, be careful for they might burst like thunder and lightning like in the Tower card. My advice from hereon then would be to listen within, like the man in the Four of Cups; both sides should learn to bend down and take the cup of love offered by the mystical hand again. 
Good luck with your family relationships Ale. Hope it turns well!
