Tarot Circle: General Celtic Cross Reading

by Brigit on November 11, 2011 in Tarot Circle

general-celtic-crossThis week, Charles from Australia has sent in his Celtic Cross reading for our Tarot Circle interpretation.

As with all Tarot Circle posts, I’ll provide my initial thoughts and then I’ll hand it over to you, the reader, to use the comments section to write what you see.

Remember there’s no right or wrong and you don’t have to be an experienced Tarot reader to comment.

The Question

Charles writes, “I was hoping you could help me interpret my Celtic Cross reading. I didn’t ask a question it was just a general reading. I am an 18 year old male just about to graduate high school and I’m single.”

The Tarot Spread

Charles used the Celtic Cross spread and drew the following cards:

  • Significator – Two of Cups
  • Crossing Card – Strength
  • Above – Knight of Swords
  • Below – Six of Cups
  • Recent Past – Four of Pentacles
  • Near Future – Ten of Wands
  • Advice – Empress
  • External Influences – King of Pentacles
  • Hopes and Fears – Three of Pentacles
  • Outcome – Lovers

My Take

Before we start with the Tarot cards, let’s consider Charles’ question. Personally, I would rephrase this to something simple like, “What does Charles need to know right now?”

This means that the reading will pick up on those areas of his life that need the most attention.

Of course, when interpreting someone else’s reading, it is important to stay as close to the question as possible as the interpretation needs to remain aligned with the reader’s original intent when laying out the cards.

Now to the cards…

Charles writes that he is single, however we see the Two of Cups as his significator card. Instead of this card being about a new relationship, it may be a reflection of a close friendship that he really values, or a series of close friendships that he has in his life.

To help clarify, we can look at the cards to the left and right to watch the flow of events. He has come through a period where he has had to focus on his education and building up a solid foundation to ensure success in the future (Four of Pentacles). Now that school is about to finish, he may be able to focus more on his relationships and friendships (Two of Cups). However, with the Ten of Wands in the future, this may be the calm before the storm as there appears to be more challenges ahead of him.

Interestingly, it is Strength that crosses Charles at this time. His energy reserves may be down and he may desperately need a break. Yet, the Ten of Wands looms ahead – does he have the strength to manage the final slog of the Ten of Wands?

Let’s also look at the Above and Below cards, in relation to him. Above, the Knight of Swords shows he is charging forth with great energy and excitement. Charles is incredibly engaged in a new journey that has begun and is so focused on success and progress. He will stop at nothing until he reaches his goal! Below, he may be starting to realise that he is leaving his childhood behind. The Six of Cups is about positive childhood memories and enjoying those friendships.

If we layer this with the Two of Cups and the fact that school is coming to an end, Charles may be facing a dilemma where he is sad to leave his school friends behind, but is so keen to pursue his progress into adulthood. I would say that the Two of Cups is an indication that he will still be able to take his best friends with him as they may also be energised by the same things that Charles is. With the Strength card, perhaps he is concerned that his friendships may not be strong enough to last this transition.

The King of Pentacles is a good sign that there is a mentor in Charles’ life who can help particularly in the area of career, further study and finances. This is someone who has ‘made it’ in the business world.

The Three of Pentacles shows a level of excitement about further study and learning from the best. But there may also be some intrepidation as there will be a lot of people who know a lot more than he does.

And finally, the Lovers card can indicate a moral choice or decision that will need to be made over the coming months. Charles is learning a lot about what’s important to him and where his values and morals lie. In the process of moving on from school, he will be evolving on a deep level and understanding more about his connection to others.

I have to say, seeing both the Two of Cups and the Lovers card, I can’t help but feel that there is a possible romance in the making. What do you think??

Overall, I get the feeling that Charles is going through an important transition as he graduates high school. He is currently consolidating his friendships and ensuring he is connected to the friends he likes best. Soon, though, there may be more challenges and more hard work as he prepares for the next phase (I am guessing Uni). Nothing really leaps out at me, though, as a ‘watch-out’. It just feels as though it is all flowing just as it should.

I will have to agree with My Tarot Club about a new relationship is definitely coming up for Charles with those three cards of 2 of Cups, Empress and the Lovers Cards. You may already know the female as a friend whereby the relationship will blossom (Empress) into something more deep and lovely. I also felt that the final Lovers Card represents a major decision coming up for you between going on to further your education (college) or go to work to be gainfully employed to bring in some much needed money. Just so you know, student loans will be made available to you if you decide on the education. Good luck to you, Charles. ~Patricia

This is my quick take on it:
You are currently in a safe and secure environment with family and friends. This comes out in the 2 of Cups and the Four of Pentacles. Because the life that you have lived up until now has been with your family and high school friends, you have still have a strong emotional tie to them to give you comfort, hence the six of cups. You are soon graduating high school and you wish to really charge into the world (knight of swords), though by going into the world alone you will have more responsibilities and have many challenges ahead of you. All of these changes that are happening now and that will happen in your relatively near future are all certainly going to make you a stronger person.

During this time and the significant changes approaching in your life, please remember to express empathy, understanding, and compassion to your loved ones (Empress). You may feel that your parents and/or other people older than you are trying to control your life and make decisions for you (king of pentacles). Whether they truly should or not is not really the question, but rather than respond with anger and frustration you should recognize their concern and show appreciation. If you feel that they are not giving you enough space, then kindly tell them to do so. You have goals and dreams that you wish to achieve, do not doubt yourself (three of pentacles). You will ultimately have to make several decisions that will impact your future. Be sure to think about all of the pros and cons of the choices you are facing to be sure you are on the right path for yourself (the Lovers).

As My Tarot Club and Patricia said, having the Two of Cups, Empress, and Lovers card all in one spread does make me wonder about a potential romance, as I do know that when I’ve done spreads for myself I never get those three cards (especially together) unless I am in some sort of relationship or in a new one. If this is the case, it would definitely shift my interpretation.

Charles, from a cursory look over your spread, I was drawn to the ‘giving and receiving’ of both the 2 of Cups and the 6 of Cups. I got the feeling you are very caring and gentle, someone who is sensitive to the needs of others. I thought you may often be the Knight of Swords rushing off to the support of others. Perhaps in the near future you may become over burdened as you take on too many concerns of other people.

Strength as the crossing card and therefore your challenge, may indicate that you are too giving of yourself to others. You haven’t yet fully developed strategies for maintaining the Strength needed to continue to present love or gentleness as the being stronger than aggression, fear or intimidation. Perhaps you are seen as the ‘healer’ or the one to go to for ‘win win’ advice. It is a challenge to live up to this expectation, of being there, soothing the savage beast of need or crisis.

The Empress is advising you to take time to nurture yourself or allow yourself to be nurtured. Perhaps do something to do with nature, a trip to the countryside, or visit the beach or spend time with someone who is nurturing, perhaps spend time with your mother, sisters or female friends or in some way get in touch with your feminine side. You are going to have to make an important decision in the coming months as indicated by the Lovers, and it would be best to feel well grounded and have the inner strength and clarity of mind to enable you to make a wise choice.

The King of Pentacles as an external influence, could this be someone who you admire and hope to emulate after all those years at school building a strong foundation for future learning and earning? Maybe it is your dad? Seek this person’s advice as he is wise and experienced in successfully managing his resources.

Perhaps you want to pursue a career in the direction of assisting others whereby people may come to you for advice regarding their life plans. While this can be exciting, rewarding and flattering it can also become, as you are aware, overwhelming – as per the 10 of Wands.

And Charles, so to the outcome of this general tarot reading, the lesson of Lovers …… to decide, make a choice, a values alignment, a love, a passion, a union, a relationship!!!!. A decision will need to be made in the coming months, one that will have major implications on your life. It will concern love. Maybe a romantic love? This situation will present itself as a surprise to you, although it is something that you already knew that someday you would have to face. What to do? How will you act? What will be the consequences of your choice? Are you ready to cope with them? Look at all the options, seek advice from the King of Pentacles and others in your life. Consider carefully. Usually the right choice is not the easiest option, but ultimately the right choice will be for the highest good.
Charles I wish you success as you enjoy the ride that life has to offer.

There is much social activity in your life now. Planning your furture which is unkown for now. I think you have discussed this with friends and family. Perhaps a sister, who may be having some difficulties at this time. It may be that you will plan to live at home while attending a Junior College. Working part-time. Finances are an issue for you, and perhaps family, not that the money is not there, but not so easily given. You may change your career path as you move on. There is something that involved with a craft that may turn into a career.

The presence of the two of cups, six of cups, empress, and the lovers intrigued me so much. The two of cups may as well have been the six of cups children themselves. Have you got a friend in your life now that might turn into a romantic partner? This is strongly supported by the Empress; you are a kind, gentle, and compassionate person on the inside. The King of Pentacles also suggests that you are a reliable person; one who gives support and is eager to help a friend. I also noticed that there are two number three cards in the reading: the Empress and the three of Pentacles. The Empress is a higher echo for the Three of Pentacles; you have the skills that you need to make your goals come to fruition. There are also two six cards in your reading: the lovers and the six of cups. Comparing the two cards, expect romance and happiness to come your way. Whoever your partner may be in the future must have surely you known you since childhood. I also noticed the dominance of the pentacles suit. Could this mean you’ve been financially stable throughout your life? The King of Pentacles also indicates that you are a man whose skills may best be honed in business; people may say that you have the future of an entrepreneur. The ten of wands also landed in the future. When compared to the three of pentacles, you are willing to be a hard worker even if it means overburdening yourself. The Knight of Swords tells me that you are a man of action and will charge for any challenges coming your way.
