Donna has participated in many of the My Tarot Club classes and always brings new perspectives and high energy to the class. She came to me with this wonderful idea a few months ago – “What do you think are the Tarot Birth Cards of the rich and famous?!” And from there, this blog post manifested. Enjoy! Over to you, Donna…
What are Tarot Birth Cards?
There are some sophisticated and detailed ways of calculating your Birth Cards and even Tarot Name Cards. For a brilliant and more complete analysis see Mary K. Greer’s “Who Are You in the Tarot?“. I did not come across this book until I had completed this article, but much of it is remarkably congruent with my own findings. A real simple way of getting started is worked out through a reduction of the numbers of your entire birth date, by repeatedly adding all the digits together until you arrive at a single digit. Find the corresponding numbered card in the Major Arcana. Then find the card whose number reduces to that final number. So, for example, if your birth date reduces to the number six, you have the Lovers. The card that reduces to six would be card number fifteen, the Devil (1+5=6). Occasionally you will have three birth cards if your total begins with 19 (the Sun). A more comprehensive explanation and another way of working out your Birth Cards (plus a handy automatic calculator!) is provided by The Tarot School. So, what do Tarot Birth Cards mean? In brief, they comprise a skeletal blue-print of your existence. They situate the basic energies you will be negotiating as part of both your personality and your life-journey.
An Idle Moment Strikes…
One evening I decided to embark upon the seemingly pointless exercise of working out the Tarot Birth Cards of some famous historical figures. There are only twelve possible combinations, of which two are statistically less likely (for Judgement/High Priestess your birth date must reduce to figures beginning with 20 and for the World/Empress, 21). This still leaves ten equally probable combinations. I began with twenty well-known public figures, and you would expect an equal distribution of people in each category, right? Wrong. To my astonishment, a distinct hierarchy began to emerge. I expanded my population of famous people and added women in to redress the balance. But it didn’t. I went up to eighty-one people (arbitrarily stopping there) and it reflected the same hierarchy as the previous twenty. Two card combinations were significantly dominant, the rest were about equal, a couple were very low, one was almost non-existent, and another completely absent! Now, I can’t pretend to have been exhaustive; it will be possible to unearth ultra-famous figures with the card combinations featuring those lower down in the hierarchy, but if this is not done selectively (i.e. without deliberately searching for and adding in those in the less dominant categories), I strongly suspect your famous historical people will pretty much reflect the same tendencies outlined below. The Top Card Combination
Temperance/Hierophant 
The gravity-defying Angel of Temperance harmoniously transmutes and blends the texts of reality into fitting compositions: shifting, refining, tempering. He is sheer celestial brilliance. The Hierophant invests this inspirational masterpiece with institutional orthodoxy. Now it’s believable. It’s a religion. Together the two represent structured ideology: ideas concretely manifested. Heaven (or Hell) on Earth. 
15 People – Top recognizably ignominious figure – Adolf Hitler. Aptly for this combination, we have the alchemist and scientist Isaac Newton. Also in this master-mind class are Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Nixon, Friedrich Engels, Charles Darwin, Vincent Van Gogh, Wilhelm Hegel, Frédéric Chopin, Charlotte Brontë, William Blake, and Stephen Spielberg.
In Second Place
(Sun), Wheel of Fortune/Magician 
The wily Magician knows just how to use what comes his way. He sees the potential in all things to conjure up what he needs from what there is. When the Wheel rolls round he seizes the opportune moment to ride this cosmic roundabout of circumstance to change the destiny of mankind. He can harness the historical tide and direct it to his own purposes and will. 
13 People – More ethos-altering Big Names coming up – Julius Caesar, Karl Marx, Martin Luther King, Gerald Ford, Machiavelli, Blaise Pascal, Florence Nightingale, Walt Disney, Emily Brontë, George Washington and, with the additional power and brilliance of The Sun – René Descartes with his light of reason, Charlie Chaplin, and (you guessed it) Napoleon.
Third Place
Star/Strength 
Hope, rebirth, and regeneration – The Star protects and guides with Strength to subdue opposing forces: this is the inspirational diplomat and visionary artist combination. It is the dance of promise and of fearless exposure; of dreams courageously given expression. 
10 People – Here we have Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin reaching for the stars, Pablo Picasso, Michaelangelo, Beethoven, William Wordsworth, Johannes Kepler organizing orbits; Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi both prevailing against the odds, and Mary Shelley’s star creation: the monster Frankenstein.
Tying in Fourth Place
Devil/Lovers 
Choices and attachments – the seduction of the earthly combined with the ideal of love. The Devil and the Lovers frame the sticking power of passionate involvement with either people or things. Compulsion, obsession, idealization, what or whom: make your choice. 
9 People – Here we have Albert Einstein and his equal attachment to both science and women. These are also the cards of Vladimir Lenin. Galileo faces a forced choice by the Inquisition, on pain of death, to recant his devilish discoveries. These are also the cards of Thomas Edison, T.S. Eliot, Jean-Paul Sartre, Theodor Adorno with his theses on materialistic enchantment and enchainment, and Lewis Carroll. Finally, these cards reflect the troubled relationships of Michael Jackson.
Moon/Hermit 
A long and testing path has been traveled from the threatening depths to the lofty heights of attainment. From obscurity to clarity, the consciousness of the Hermit realizes the deep unconscious vistas of the Moon. 
9 People – Josef Stalin, Mother Teresa, John Keats, Francis Bacon, Franz Liszt, Leo Tolstoy,Mahatma Gandhi, the troubled Elvis Presley, and Nicholas Copernicus who inaugurated the Age of Enlightenment which displaced the superstitious medieval world-view: very Moon/Hermit!
Death/Emperor 
Death scythes through with inevitability – it’s the end of something and must be followed by a new beginning. The Emperor establishes dominion in the midst of change and transition is transposed into structure; change is made permanent and Death is authorized. 
9 People – Inevitably, King Henry VIII decreeing the death of six wives. The mysterious death-drive proposed by Sigmund Freud, the end of a philosophical tradition and the start of a new understanding with Emmanuel Kant; Thomas Hobbes with a new social contract for the life of man in nature is, ‘nasty, poor, brutish, and short’ (Leviathan), John Locke with his new system of government, Michael Faraday, the imperious Margaret Thatcher, Marie Curie with her work on radiology for cancer, and even Percy Shelley with the aptly entitled Prometheus Unbound – and that squabble over who owned the ashes of his dead heart.
Tying for Fifth Place
Tower/Chariot 
An edifice falls and the Chariot steers victoriously through the ruins. Set ways of doing things topple as the Chariot sets free a new direction controlled by self-belief and determination. Restriction is transfigured into release. 
5 People – J.F. Kennedy with his iconoclastic breaking of the old order, the near catastrophes of the war-beset Winston Churchill, the ground-breaking discoveries of Stephen Hawking, Tintoretto with his new depictions of light, and the perversity of Theodor Dostoyevsky.
Justice/High Priestess 
Justice delivers a verdict: actions and consequences are put on trial. Fairness and reason are attuned to the inner promptings of the High Priestess whose hidden knowledge animates decisions. Will it be wisdom or madness? 
5 People – Gregori Rasputin, the murdered “mad monk” and mystical prophet of Czar Nicholas II. The life blighted by injustices endured by Edgar Allen Poe. Here we also find Mozart the child prodigy, Claude Monet, and Anne Brontë.
Close to Last, But Not Least
Hanged Man/Empress 
The unusual Hanged Man waits passively upon the fecundity of The Empress to give birth to his new perspective. Children can take many forms, ideas or babies: she protects their growth and nurtures them all with motherly love and care. 
4 People – Here we find Hilary Clinton with her concern for women’s rights, Thomas Paine and The Rights of Man, Charles Dickens emphasizing the importance of charity and, rather fittingly, Casanova.
Almost Last
Judgement/High Priestess 
An inner conviction is given a wider context and a secret desire is let loose upon the world. Ideas are given over to posterity and Judgement will be dramatic. A private vision has lasting impact. 
2 People – The idiosyncratic Mussolini with the cardboard cut-out of himself placed in his officewindow so that he could be judged as working late into the night, and thegenerational adoration for Beatrix Potter’s much loved Peter Rabbit stories.
Last
World/Empress Zero People – Not just last but non-existent. No famous people at all.
Conclusions/Observations
Rather obviously, we have most of our world-changing figures in the Temperance/Hierophant and Wheel/Magician categories. Then it’s almost level-pegging until we reach Tower/Chariot and Justice/High Priestess. Whilst Judgement/High Priestess and World/Empress are statistically less likely, it is a surprise to find nobody with the World/Empress combination. However, the Hanged Man/Empress combination ought to have the same proportion of famous names as the others and it doesn’t: this seems largely to be the category of artists, writers and actors rather than political mavericks. The Tarot appears to reflect the lack of “feminine” values in our patriarchally dominated world history; an obvious missing energy. As for the World – with its emphasis on integrity, harmony, peace, unity, completion, concern for the planet, respect for others – as the Tarot confirms to us through this exercise, the World is yet to be achieved. Of course, one can juggle things about (up to a point) but I also translated the whole lot into the Julian Calendar. Surprisingly, the Temperance/Hierophant combination still comes out on top; the rest were still in the middle, very few Hanged Man/Empresses again – and still no World.
Over to You! These are well-known historical figures in the West, but can you find a pattern of Tarot Birth Cards from the Eastern tradition or in other specific spheres, such as sports or music? Is there a pattern? You might also compare Tarot Birth Cards with Numerology Lifepath numbers where 1 appears dominant (Wheel, Magician). Oh – and can anyone discover some famous World/Empresses? I prefer Mary Greer/Angeles Arrien’s method, although in many ways, the Amberstone’s way is easier to understand. Thank you! Yes, I agree that Mary K. Greer’s method is more nuanced and complete, whereas the Amberstone’s is easier to comprehend. I took the most reductive method I could find as it can get pretty complex so I wanted it to be ultra easy and accessible for anyone completely unfamiliar with the whole idea, sort of Sun signs as opposed to an entire astrological chart of planets in Houses. Thank you so much for the links, I shall read those with great interest! It is fascinating, isn’t it, and, I think, surprisingly on the mark – it would be great for people to have an added Tarot resource in terms of greater familiarity with the Birth Cards.

The Shadow/Teacher card is what comes up if you use Mary K. Greer’s methodology, as opposed to the Tarot School calculator (Ruth Ann and Wald Amberstone).
It is whatever other card could reduce to the single-digit, within the Major Arcana.
So for your combo – World/Empress (which by the way, DOES lots of famous people – like Hillary Clinton, who I also wrote an article about), the World is card 21, the Empress is 3, and the other card within the Majors that also reduces to 3 is .. 12: The Hanged Man.
So for World/Empress folks, Justice is like the invisible influence whose potential is there. Thus, it can be a “shadow” or teacher influence. Not all combinations have a shadow, but the ones that don’t are all (surprise) nighttime cards as part of the combo, so they come carrying their own built-in teacher influence.
Hope that makes some sense. (Can you tell, I can’t help myself .. I just love that folks are getting the word about this very intriguing aspect of Tarot!!!).
(Oh and ps: As I said, there are LOTS of Empress/World people: Queen Victoria, Bobby Kennedy, Anne Frank, Margaret Mead, Amelia Earhart, David Bowie, and Kate Middleton just to name a few).

Ha, I’m just having your coffee! Thank you for that – well done with the Empress/World combination! I must confess, I was largely checking historico-political figures which would perhaps be globally recognized, although I missed Bobby Kennedy and Queen Vic! And Indira Ghandi. The people in this category seem diverse and yet largely aspirational-creative (to coin a category) as a thread in common. Poets, playwrights, actors, humanitarians. I guess Goethe, with his Elective Affinites and Young Werther and the rest would be more universally known, ditto Scott Fitzgerald, but John Travolta may not be in the historical annals. It’s interesting WHO decides on the “famous” – history is always written by the victors, as they say. After all, most of the great Chinese philosophers and politicians are missing in Western history books. I didn’t factor them in either, in so far anyone can ascertain their exact birthdates; I just stuck to a sample as the starting point for further exploration.
Now, Sofiasky – it is very rare to have a birthdate reducing to a single 3! Yes, Beth Owl’s Daughter puts it very well regarding the Shadow/Teacher card. I usually think of the Shadow or Teacher card in a Jungian fashion as elements on your “dark-side” or the underside of your personality: a kind of short-hand umbrella term for what may repressed, concealed, marginalized, and perhaps feared. That said, all parts of our personalities are interlinked like the rings of an onion, so your Shadow side will be an emergent aspect of your self, obtruding and influencing you, however conscious you are of it. Or not. In other words (and we all have our Shadow sides) the Shadow doubles as Teacher in the sense that it signifies those elements it would help us to be aware of in any quest for self-understanding. You might have a surprising and unexpected response to something and think, ‘why on earth did I react in that way!’ – a peep at your Shadow card may well reveal a glimpse of some of the subterranean factors at play. As Beth Owls Daughter rightly points out, we can then harness the potential of these “night-side” factors.

Funny enough, some minutes ago my order of Mary Greer’s book arrived.
i’ve been using the soul / personality / shadow card to help me understand the personality of some of my patients (i’m a natural practitioner) and in some cases it has been intringuingly accurate and helpful indeed.
the more data we have about the patients, the more taylored can be our natural recomendations. tarot may indeed be a resourceful tool for many processes in our lives… a yellow brick road

Hi Stephanie. That’s often the combination for creative and innovative people – quite a high number of Tarotists, astrologers and psychics! In terms of personality, it means you have the courage to pursue hopes and dreams and can perceive the greater spiritual meaning to mundane life. You can see beyond yourself into a vista of possibility informing yet beyond individual projects, and that’s where your sense of self is most at home – not in the world but the world reflected through a greater sense of meaning. With Strength it means you are also adept at working with a sense of harmony rather than opposition. Astrologically, the two cards correspond to Aquarius and Leo. Although emotional you express emotions in a unique way, and can let your instincts be guided by objectivity. The challenge presented by this combination is that of facing fears head-on and accepting your deepest impulses.

Hi Stephanie, I wouldn’t get too hung up on the differences – sometimes the Tarot Birth cards do reflect our personal astrological signs but sometimes they don’t. I would see it as a confluence of tendencies and influences; extra paths on a map. In fact, the signs associated with the Major Arcana have been revisionist, I believe that the Order of the Golden Dawn changed some of it according to their card numbering system. So it depends who you read and from what tradition. One very clear introduction to the “current” ascription of planets to the Majors can be found by the Celeb astrologer Michele Knight

Vicki, thank you for your interest! The Hierophant and Temperance correspond astrologically to Taurus and Sagittarius. This combination usually ensures that you are an excellent communicator, and able to make the diffuse or obscure intelligible to others. You’re a perpetual student, always learning, and you will either question authority or become one. Usually Hierophant/Temperance people have a strong sense of morality, of what is right and wrong, but with Temperance you are able, if you wish, to modify or “temper” extremes and creatively blend opposing thoughts and different factors together, like making a tapestry: all the yarn is combined into a picture which transcends the individual strands. So there’s a kind of powerful balancing act going on between a tendency to fasten upon a “certainty” in the Heirophant, and the potential to be flexible and alchemically stir together what appear to be conflicting or irreconcilable points of view. With this combination, you’ll do whichever is most effective to achieve your goals.

Are Audrey Hepburn (May 5th 1929) and Rihanna (February 20th 1988) Empress/World people?
Hi Christina, I believe that Audrey Hepburn was born on 4th May, not the 5th, which would make her Hanged Man/Empress. Same with Rhianna. Oddly, having just said it is rare for anyone to reduce to a single 3, both of those do! My Tarot Club website must be rare and unique to get all these single 3s. Hanged Man/World would be their Shadow/Teacher cards. I know, it does get confusing at times, which is why it’s easier to just start with your basic two or three “Personality” Birth Cards. If you want to dive further in, then definitely look at Mary K. Greer’s book where she sets it all out as “constellations”. She also includes the Fool for good measure whereas the Amberstones leave the Fool out on the basis that the Fool is incarnated through the entire Major Arcana. However, I think the Fool is useful as a Shadow Factor in particular.
Stephanie, yes I was concerned that bringing in Astrological signs might be confusing and I can totally relate to what you say. I think many of us when starting out manage to get overwhelmed with the volume of information out there. Don’t let it muddle you or put you off – it’s YOUR Tarot. There isn’t one codified way of reading the cards. Note down just what they mean to you when you look at them before scraping through hundreds of sometimes contradictory books and websites. Forget the Elemental Dignities and Kabbalah and all of that until much later on. Get comfortable and confident with the basic sense of what they say to you. Let them talk to you, perhaps keep a journal, see how and what they mean for you in your life. Only then start looking at all the extra possible layers of meaning. You don’t want to be swamped, and, indeed, you can give a perfectly good Tarot reading without knowing your Alchemical signs from your elbow. Only take in what helps you as you evolve, the rest can go on the back-burner. Start with you as the Chief Intuitive Voice to avoid information-overload.
Keeping a journal and actually remembering what the cards mean to me is a lot. Maybe I can work on it over time
It can seem a lot to remember. You could try whizzing through the cards – call it a speed read – and jot down just a couple of words for each, then a couple from My Tarot Club over on the meanings of the cards sections. Keep it to key words to jog your mind. Perhaps start with just the Major Arcana, and what the suit elements mean (Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles). Once you are on nodding terms with the suits you can say something about the basic energy of any card in the deck. If it’s a Cups card, for example, you will know it’s going to concern the emotional realm of feelings, relationships, the imagination, creativity, and the subconscious.

Very interesting. I’ve heard and worked with Mary Greer’s personality, shadow, soul cards before but this one is new to me. I’m a Justice/High Priestess combination.
Hi there Jennifer. I invented my own method but it still results in what, using Mary Greer’s technique, would be your Personality and Soul cards. With my method the ultimate reduction would give you the Soul card and the Major Arcana card which reduces to that number would be the Personality card. The Tarot School has yet another method but, again, will produce the same cards. It’s great that you are already working with Birth Cards. The Justice/High Priestess combination is an oppositional yet entirely logical juxtaposition as, whereas Justice concerns the “outer” world, the High Priestess relates to your “inner” world. Two sides of the same coin where both are concerned with “truth” but truth that originates from two directions. The task or challenge of this combination is to marry the two together harmoniously so that your inward intuition and “truths” can be outwardly evaluated with logic and reason whilst truths provided from the external world need to “feel right” to you at a deep level of your psyche in order for you to accept them. This is not always possible with inexplicable intuitive truths yet you would still need to judge whether that is the case! And vice versa – some social or conventional truths may not be susceptible to an intuitive response. Discrimination and intuition need to work together as a unity with this combination, yet also to respect those cases where they operate in different spheres. Identity and Difference are the watch-words.

Hello Delphina, I’m delighted that you enjoyed it so much. Yes, Einstein is perennially fascinating, isn’t he?! Complex though, as his work covers quite a bewildering number of theses. The famous E=MC2 was the Special Theory (1905) when he was only 26, even though we always seem to use the “old” Einstein photographs, as if wisdom or genius is or should be reserved to old age. The General Theory of Relativity evolved between 1907-15. One part of The Special Theory (not that I can simplify it really, or even understand most of it) was about how, because of the way we see light, the space-time frame of a moving object seems to slow down when measured from the space-time frame of the observer. In the General Theory it’s (amongst other things) about how the gravitational attraction between bodies or masses is a product of or a result of the bending or curving of space/time by those masses. For a non-physicist like me, and most of us, it gets exciting in a science-fiction kind of way with all the paradoxes. Recently it’s been contested that the speed of light (186,000 miles a second/300,000km) is not a constant. Best of luck with contesting that! I wouldn’t mind contesting it myself (in another idle moment) but there’s no way I could do the maths. Shame. I think what I love most about Einstein is that no matter how minimal one’s understanding of him, it really does inspire the imagination. Given the primacy of “attraction” with gravity and space/time, I suppose the Devil/Lovers combination really does seem apt. Changing tack – that is so gorgeous to share a birthday with Mother Teresa! You might have to explain why you belong to two groups – both Devil/Lovers and Moon/Hermit? I’m thinking of you being in two places at once by bending space/time and going backwards and forwards now

Hi Marge, yes it’s a fascinating combo! The word “responsibility” is key and there are a lot of 20/2 politicians. Bill Clinton and Michelle Obama are also 20/2. Elevens are supposed to be exceptional individuals in Numerology, born to help others and improve standards of living. Again, quite a few politicians are life path 11. It’s the number of humanitarian idealists. It is similar, you’re right.

I would like to say that your article has really inspired me! My step brother has a World/ Empress combo. I was intrigued to find somebody famous with it too. I found a couple of people so far – actor David Sutcliffe ( 8 june 1969) and surprisingly – Arnold Schwarzenegger ( 30 july 1947). They might be not as influential as others, but certainly famous. I thought that might help your analysis.
