And this is a special Ask Brigit video post where I answer your questions about the Tarot.

Here’s something I get asked A LOT. “How do you shuffle the Tarot cards?”

It may seem pretty simple on the surface, but trust me, there ARE a lot of different ways to shuffle the Tarot cards. Here are just a few:

Method #1: Overhand Shuffle

This is the most common way of shuffling a deck of cards. Hold the deck in one hand and use your other hand to shuffle the cards from one side to the other of the main deck.

Method #2: Cut the Deck

Cut the deck into a number of different piles and then bring those piles back together again.

Method #3: Casino Style

Cut the deck into two and then fan one pile into the other.

Method #4: Messy Pile Shuffle

Lay the cards face-down on the table and then use your hands to spread out the cards in a big, messy pile. Then, bring the cards back together into one pile.

So which is the right method? Well, try them out and choose what works best for you. You might also use a combination of methods in your readings. For example, I shuffle overhand, cut the deck into three piles, turn one pile 180 degrees, put them back together and shuffle again.

You might be wondering why I turn a pile 180 degrees. Well, that’s because I work with reversed cards and I like to make sure I’m getting turning the cards upright and reversed as I shuffle.

So which shuffling method do you prefer? Leave your comments below.

I have a habit of doing a riffle shuffle before I begin a reading. I feel it clears the last reading and energy, then I do the over hand shuffle 3 times. I’m quite routine haha!

I’ve always done like my own thing of what felt right, for most of my own personal readings I do the overhand shuffle, but I don’t go back and forth on both sides. If cards pop out while I’m shuffling them, I only read the ones the are faced upright. Everything else gets placed into the deck where they “fit”.

And then when I feel the that shuffle is complete, I cut the deck in two and feel for which deck draws me in more. It’s usually a gut feeling, I wonder if anyone gets like that too?

Followed by a last over hand shuffle, and during all three I think about my problem, topic or question. But mostly during my last shuffle I say my own little mantra that I’ve been saying since like ever!

My favorite is Casino Style ! Also would love to know how to select cards for a spread. There are so many ways of doing it .Which is the best method to ensure a fair random selection of cards ?

Good question – I would say any of them, except maybe “Messy Pile”. It also helps to put the cards back into the deck one by one after a reading to make sure they are all randomly organised.

Why do you think the messy pile doesn’t help with a random selection? I love this one because it makes sure I get reversals and everything gets shuffled up. I don’t use it alone, but in combination with the overhand shuffle. I’ve never felt like I’m not picking random cards.

It depends how messy your pile gets! If you can be super messy, then yes, it’ll work a treat :)

Casino style. I want a fair share of reversed cards.

I was wondering how you clear the energy from the cards when doing readings for different people in the same day.

I usually do it with meditation or deep breathing in between. Here are a few more ideas for cleansing and clearing your Tarot cards.

Great video, Brigit – Thanks! I take my time over shuffling, actually. It get me into the ‘zone’ abd helps me align my energy with my client, especially if it’s a distance reader. So I’ll casino the deck, then reverse half, casino again, and then maybe cut and mix, before a final casino. I guess I have a kind of ritual so that I always like to use the casino style shuffle three times……

I do the casino style as part of it. But, I also do a normal card playing shuffle – instead of the front and back shuffle, I kind of blend them into together like I would a normal deck of playing cards. I am new to tarot, and so far I haven’t see anyone do that kind of shuffle for their tarot cards.

I’m enjoying your website, by the way. :)

I like to do the messy style shuffle, it lets me make sure there are reversals in my deck.

I twist the pile between my hands to turn them upright and reversed. It is, in a way, a version of method #4, but I want my hands to have maximum control (since they are the outlets of my energy) and to not have any foreign object (as in the surface of the desk) to intervene. After I have twisted the deck to my heart’s content, I arrange them to a deck and do the overhand.

One additional thing I might add is that if during the overhand I accidentally flip or drop a card and see what it is, I remember it and use it as an explanation on the main card I draw. I have a feeling that sometimes the deck just has too much to tell and thus, spills out a few cards during the shuffling just to give me a hint.
