Today, I welcome back Sherry, a talented Endorsed Reader on My Tarot Club. I’ve always been amazed with Sherry’s conversations with ‘upstairs’ and her general psychic abilities, especially how she marries this with the Tarot. In this post, she shares exactly how to access your psychic talents with the Tarot. Over to you, Sherry…
I remember receiving my first deck of Rider Waite tarot cards when I was 12 years old and looking curiously at the little white book that accompanied them, wondering how I was ever going to learn what all these magical cards meant, let alone put them together in a reading. At this point in my life, I was yet to learn that the meanings would have little relevance to my ability to read and so I struggled to memorise each card. The problem was, the more books I bought about tarot, the more meanings there were and the more confused I became. Never mind about the reversals, card combinations and spreads! Sound familiar?
So I put my cards away for a number of years and instead focused on receiving readings from psychics and tarot card readers at festivals, markets and anywhere I could find them really. What they told me was secondary to my main interest – the link between the information they put forward and the cards on the table. After a while, I noticed something – and I mean really noticed it for the first time. Sometimes the reading had very little to do with the cards laid out in front of me! The reader would place the first few cards and then start speaking, occasionally pointing to a card here or there. But I knew the information they were giving me was more than was just contained in the meaning of that card. They were using the cards as springboards to receive psychic information. Well, let me tell you, I thought I had discovered a whole new world! Tarot cards could be used in the same way as crystal balls, runes, bowls of water and any other focal point on the table – as a distraction for Ego so that other information could come through.
With my newfound knowledge, I packed up my tarot books and focused instead on how to work with tarot to facilitate a psychic reading. Twenty years and a lot of readings later, the depth and richness provided by spirit in the way they use the cards to transmit information to me and my clients is a constant surprise and source of amazement to me. I literally never know what I’m going to receive and being open to the process is very important. So if you are someone who is well-versed in the meanings of all the tarot cards but struggle to provide a reading to someone because you can’t put the story together or see how one card relates to another, I have some tips for you that you can use to move your readings to the next level.
Stop ‘thinking’ the cards and start ‘feeling’ them
Your logical mind and Ego are actually going to trip you up during readings. Apart from providing you with a continuous assessment on how you’re doing (which may or may not be accurate), your Ego is pretty useless in this situation. So what’s the solution? Distract it! Lay out your cards in the spread you have chosen and then while your mind is looking at the cards, listen or feel for messages from the spread. I liken this process to a small stream. Imagine your tarot cards in the spread are rocks in the bottom of the stream and the message from spirit is the water running over the top. Feel the messages in the water. Sit back and look at the flow of the cards and wait for inspiration.
Practice waiting after you’ve laid out the cards
One of the reasons I really enjoy doing email readings is that there is no rush. I like to wait for the story to click in and for the information to come to me after I’ve drawn some cards. Sometimes when I’m given something from spirit, I like to walk around the room a few times, feeling the information fully and deciding how to present it. The point is, when you’re learning to use your cards in this new way, give yourself time for the messages to come and be prepared to wait patiently. Don’t rush forward with the information and take a second to ensure you’re interpreting what you’re receiving correctly.
Take each card as it comes
Related to waiting for information after you’ve created a spread is taking each card as it comes. It can be easy to get overwhelmed and panic that ‘oh geez, I have 16 cards on the table and how can ever make a reading out of this?’ Practice focusing on the first card and waiting for the information. It will logically lead to your next card without you having to force it.
Consider how spirit is using the cards
When you are using your tarot cards as psychic tools, something you will also notice is that not all cards in the spread are used, or are not necessarily used for fixed meaning. For example, instead of a card having a meaning in and of itself, consider that upstairs may be indicating an ‘energy’ with that card. So let’s say you’re doing a career reading for someone and all of a sudden the Lovers appears in the middle. ‘Um what?’ you might think – is this person going to have an affair at work? Consider that spirit might be using the Lovers card to indicate the passion or intensity your client injects into their working life. From this perspective, this allows the cards to redefine themselves as spirit sees fit to relay information to you. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. While you are still fixated on every card having a concrete meaning in the spread, you negate the opportunity for the cards to take on other forms and for spirit to communicate effectively.
Be aware of other things happening around you as you read
This one is another big point. Spirit choose a variety of ways to communicate with readers during readings. You may hear things, see things, feel things and even smell things. It pays to be very aware of what is happening in your own auric field (about a metre all around you) while you’re reading. This sort of sensitivity can be enhanced by meditation and by practicing awareness.
Progress other areas of your spiritual development
For those impatient folk among us (myself included), unfortunately reading using psychic ability doesn’t always magically commence when you want it to. Instead, it develops over time – and I am talking years, not days. However, you can help this along by focusing on developing your psychic ability outside of readings. This may take the form of reading books and practising exercises, joining a reputable spiritualist group, taking a course etc. You will begin to notice that what you do away from your tarot cards starts to incorporate itself into your readings and in this way, you strengthen your psychic muscles and start to develop more depth to your readings.
While you are developing your psychic abilities, you may like to avoid charging people for readings until you’ve hit your stride. I have seen novice tarot readers being told ‘oh just tell the client anything that comes into your head’ and have watched on in dismay as the poor reader told their confused client that ‘oh you must be a Leo because you have blonde hair’ and ‘oh I see dolphins flying around your head’. The constant line of chatter your Ego and imagination provide is something completely different from messages from spirit and taking a long-term approach to learning how to do psychic readings, coupled with lots of practice is what’s needed. You can also practice in a very relaxed environment via the Free Readers page at My Tarot Club (https://My Tarot Clubtarot.com/become-a-free-tarot-reader/) where you can do free readings for feedback on accuracy – a great way to develop your skills!

Hi Sherry,
Another one of your wonderful posts which keeps us on the right track towards integration of psychic abilities and tarot card reading. You have given a step wise guide on how to make a tarot reading a truly psychic experience in itself. The gradual steps to enhance your psychic abilities and integrate it with tarot reading have been so well explained by you.Your readers wil benefit a lot with this post.
I feel the ego and over active intellectual activity hampers in development of the innate psychic talent. The vibrations are there but one has to tune at the right frequency to connect with the spirits.I have been trying to develop my psychic abilities too,and I feel that I have made a good progress in last one year.Calming an over active mind, self realization techniques and understanding the deep spiritual concepts have all helped in my psychic journey.
Do you feel that both Tarot and psychic development can go together,or one should First tune at a vibrational and psychic level before getting into the intellectual framework of Tarot reading ? What has been your experience ? Would love to hear your views.
Regards,
Aasheesh
Hi Aasheesh – glad to hear you’re making good progress! In relation to your question, I feel as though your psychic ability and tarot reading can develop independent of each other or one can be facilitated by the other. I’ve experienced both situations.
I actually spent quite a number of years not using the cards and my psychic abilities developed in other areas. When I came back to tarot, another layer of development occurred. In my experience, this sort of ability is not a straight trajectory and more like a tree where you have different branches of activity going in different directions but they all stem from the one ability (the trunk). I have some years where I see and interact with spirit so I might stop reading while that develops and then I shoot off in another direction with a focus on reincarnation or something. So it’s lots of different things that contribute to the one overarching ability. So I see tarot as a branch or offshoot of my primary ability, if that makes sense? That’s why I encourage people to engage in other aspects of psychic development besides cards because when you do, you will find that somehow it contributes to your reading abilities and makes them that much better.
This is an excellent article. Thankyou so much Sherry, for writing this and thankyou Brigit for featuring this article. I’m taking baby steps right now so I’ve only begun to learn the meanings of the cards from reference materials because I need that base before I take my knowledge further. I am grateful for this reminder that we need to take the knowledge imparted to us by experts but really, making that knowledge my OWN using my interpretations and instincts is what will make me an excellent reader. What a coincidence that just yesterday I was browsing for books on how to increase psychic ability and connect with our spirit guides..and today I see this article. Must be a sign that I am on the right path!
That’s no coincidence Sangeeta but instead a perfect example of how your guides are trying to help you along by giving you what you need. There’s a two part blog about guides that may interest you here:

Keep up the great work!

Oh I see it now! Just before I enrolled for the TF1 I enrolled to learn Reiki too. The first time I ever tought I should learn tarot and reiki was when I was in school. I couldn’t pursue these interets then. I seem to have wasted decades not really taking my interests seriously
Two years ago I started buying and collecting gem stones as if my life depended on it! I spent quite an amount though I couldn’t understand why I was suddenly obsessed with them. Now I’m back to tarot and Reiki. I will look more closely at these kind of ‘coincidences’ now that you’ve pointed out that its a sign
Fascinating article. I found that using the Tarot really helped unleash my psychic abilities; although they tend to be fairly uncontrolled so I don’t claim to be a ‘psychic Tarot reader’. It’s just an added occasional bonus
Hi Eva
You know that ‘uncontrollability’ you refer to is actually quite a common thing but for some reason is never really talked about in the psychic community. But I can assure you, what you’re experiencing is very normal. I consider psychic ability to be a bit like artistic ability – one day you’re on fire and 100% working with it and the next day it’s like writer’s block has set in. I have no idea why this occurs but I’m sure there’s an answer out there somewhere. If anyone has a theory, I would love to hear. I do know though that as you gain experience and develop that psychic muscle that it doesn’t happen as frequently. Keep at it Eva because it grows all the time and that added occasional bonus may turn out to be your bread and butter one day!
Sherry
Dear Sherry, the UNCONTROLABILITY issue. Being psychic is the ability to Listen to what is being said into ones head and then to transfer the message to others who are not able do this for themselves. A psychic is like a cell phone, The caller is invisible, the phone(psychic) is the instrument for information that is transferred to the receiver (person getting the reading).Just like in a regular conversation there is a person talking (an invisible person)and giving the information to the Psychic (Cell phone). There can be many (persons) spirits talking at one time trying to get in on the conversation. The clutter of information creates the “uncontrolability”. Use telepathy to tell the spirits to allow one (person) to speak for the group. the easiest way to understand spirits is to realize that we are spirits, only contained within a body. I have found My Tarot Clubs to be the best and most honest Tarot site on line. Honesty and not fantasy is the most important element in seeking wisdom about spirit. Amazingly the Tarot cards are able to establish their own line of communication with a person individually and reading styles can often vary. Bottom line, all psychic readings are about hearing. Sherry and Brigit please keep up the good work, i always read and refer new learners to this site-Ruth
Thanks so much for your support and positive feedback, Ruth.
Hi Sherry,
This is absolutely wonderful advice for tarot readers. I have been reading tarot cards for 17 years and this is how my readings have developed over the years. Clare.x
Thanks Clare! Glad you enjoyed it
Sherry
Hi sherry, its a happy coincidence to read this blog!! i have just begun to give readings without feeling compelled to read all the cards since some cards draw attention by themselves and form a story…and yes developing other meditating, healing practices somehow opens up the tarot readings. I m glad u touched upon the point of not charging for readings when you are just developing your psychic abilities…that is important too. Thnx for a great article!
Thanks mystical – yes sometimes not all cards in the spread are for the client as such. They are for YOU – upstairs is indicating energy around certain events or people to help you form the right words for the reading. Sounds like you’re doing a great job!
Sherry
I’m still learning all the different meanings of the tarot cards, but I’m getting better and better the more I practice. I think the biggest takeaway from this article for me is to “feel” the cards, and not “think” about them. Great post
Yes practice is the key Stephanie. Remember your guides are right there waiting to communicate with you so take notice of anything special that jumps out at you too when you’re learning the meanings because upstairs will want to create their own system of communication with you.
Sherry
Hi Sherry,
What a beautiful and meaningful post you have written I must say ! I was reading it ,reached just halfway and coudn’t resist myself from appreciating you for this first and complete the left out portion later. I must appreciate your honesty as you have really revealed your secret sauce for all to read and benefit from it. And though I have not taken any readings from you,yet am sure you would be giving your 100% to your clients. Thank you once again for such gem of information. Now Iam getting back to read the post from where I left it.
Thank you for your kind words Neha!
Sherry
Totally agree, you have to feel the cards and than the meaning comes. Well I am still learning and this was so helpful. Thanks once again. Emma
You’re welcome Emma and glad you enjoyed the article!
Sherry
I laughed because I actually met a new tarot card reader at a tarot class once who said he saw dolphins around me. I was surprised he charged people for his readings when he was just a beginner and didn’t even have a basic understanding of all the cards yet. I would hate to be one of his victims/clients haha.
Yes there are a lot of people out there doing readings who really shouldn’t be. I come across lots of them. This is why when you’re beginning to read, it’s really important to get lots of readings yourself from other readers so you develop an understanding of what the benchmark is.
Sherry
Hey Sherry, your advice to get several readings to know the benchmark out there puts in perspective why i feel so inclined to keep getting my cards read! Thnx for your honest inputs.
Hi Mystical – I get heaps of readings for myself. I always ask the same question too because I like to see the way different people answer, the spreads they use etc. It’s a fantastic way to get a rounded understanding of what’s out there in the industry. The actual answer doesn’t interest me that much but the way readers go about answering it does. I’ve learned a LOT about how not to read actually and also what makes a good reader.
If you really want to ramp up your experience, tell spirit before you go that you would like a ‘lead’ or to learn something about reading from the reading you’re about to get. I do this and invariably something strikes me in the reading and off I go on a new tangent to explore that adds to my knowledge.
Sherry
It is hard to understand psychic abilities do not come over night…sometimes I just wish it would be easy way out…but I agree with you…you have to work on it. I am learning slowly, meditatating almost every night…Just recently I started using selenite gemstone for meditation…what a power this rock has
you have to try this!
Thanks for great article.
Lisa
Hi Lisa
Thanks for your comment – I actually don’t know anything about crystals really so haven’t heard of selenite. Sometimes I use clear quartz in my hand just to rev things up a bit, but I will go buy some selenite on your recommendation.
Sherry
What an excellent way to study Tarot to the next level! I agree when you mentioned how a person should be aware of his/her surroundings while doing the reading: anything could trigger
I am at the stage of trying to marry the two together. I pick up things about people just being close to them. but when I put tarot cards down, I am distracted by what the cards meanings are. I am trying to go with my feelings about what is in front of me but with difficulty as I think I am not trusting myself and look on this website for the meanings of the cards instead.
Hi Mairs
Yes trusting yourself is a big thing for this sort of reading. Have you considered using oracle cards instead of tarot? Then you are free to run with what you’re picking up from the person and won’t be distracted by the meaning of the cards. I have a forthcoming blog post on this website next month that talks about how to work with psychic messages in readings, so keep an eye out for it because it may help. You can sign up to the My Tarot Club newsletter so you will be notified when it comes out if you aren’t signed up already
Sherry
Yes that is a great idea about the oracles. Thanks for that Sherry. Yes I am already signed up for the newsletter from My Tarot Club. Thanks
Thanks Sherry … Indeed a wonderful article .. We generally miss on these minute things and always try to relate all cards by their meanings .. However what always confuses me especially when reading for family and friends is that my past experience and perception about them plays up in my interpretations and I doubt if what I am reading is what the message coming across or i am reading from my sub-conscious mind .. Any suggestions to address this situation .. Thanks Hema
Hi Hema – this is the exact reason why I don’t like reading for people I know and is a very common situation for readers. One thing I have found is that you have to make an extra special effort to read ‘neutrally’. So here, say you draw the King of Pentacles and you *know* the cards are referring to your relative’s husband; instead of assuming that, read as you would for a complete stranger and describe the man as if you didn’t know him.
I read for someone once and assumed I knew the characters involved. However, I did the reading as I would for a stranger and as we went through, it turned out that the people weren’t who I thought they were and the client related the information to another set of people.
So my advice would be not to ‘shortcut’ and assume you know the situation and the people but describe your cards and wait for the CLIENT to make the connection with the information and not make it yourself. Once they say ‘oh that’s such and such’ then you can continue to read from that information. So you are letting the client tell you instead of you telling the client.
Sherry
Thanks Sherry .. seems to be the right way of doing it, it will need effort but i shall definitely try this next time ..
Hema, I’m with you. I often find it challenging to read for people I know. Very close friends seem to be OK because we typically work together in the reading and collaborate to bring about an insightful picture of what’s happening. But for others, it can be hard. I also find that it can easily become ‘too much information’ especially for people I know but am not close to. I don’t really need to know all of their private stuff, yet the reading touches on these areas.
Wonderful article Sherry! In my experience, it can be difficult to wean yourself off of specific book-defined Tarot meanings. I have since learned how to tune into all my senses and my email-based Tarot business has been my saving grace! I take my sweet time with a reading, maybe even hours! Sometimes if I’m really stumped, I’ll get up and do something else and come back for a fresh look. This has really allowed me to receive and interpret any hints, omens and other info from the universe regarding the spread. I find that both myself and my client are more satisfied with the reading when I open myself to my guides and universal consciousness.
It has definitely taken years for me to learn to pay attention to the small voices and feelings in me – the good news is, with more and more practice, they got louder and stronger
Tarot aside, everyday I am hearing voices or seeing visions telling me to do or avoid something that ends up really benefitting me in the end! I love how this universe of ours works!!
Hi Stephanie – you’ve got the right idea about leaving your reading and coming back to it. A famous psychic named Sonia Choquette always says ‘don’t talk on it, walk on it’ because physical movement encourages psychic communication. Something else you can also try if you’re stumped in a reading is to go back to the remainder of the deck and ask upstairs to show you what something means. So point to the card you don’t understand and ask for more information and then cut the deck. The card you reveal should provide a further clue.
Sherry
I think doing email Tarot readings is a wonderful way to ease into reading because, as you say, you get some extra time and space to really think through the reading and let it percolate. Over time, though, you’ll find it becomes so much easier (and faster) to do a reading – it just flows! Sounds like you are definitely getting there!
I am reading your blog for quite a while and have to say thanks for all the useful informations. I am learning tarot reading…have some problems to charge for the readings because I am still learning, but when its the right time hehe
